Exploring Southwark and discovering its history
When next you walk up Borough High Street, pause to look over the entrance to No. 60 for there you will see an image of a lighthouse integrated into the brickwork. The lighthouse was the symbol of the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation who occupied the building from 1900 to 1964. The head office was at Ocean House in Moorgate and a lighthouse similarly still adorns that building, set into an alcove at one of the corners of the building.
The company became a subsidiary of Commercial Union Assurance Company in 1910 which is now part of the Aviva Group. A firm of solicitors now occupies the Borough High Street office and the former head office in Moorgate is occupied by the Habib Bank AG Zurich.
