Exploring Southwark and discovering its history
3 June 2017
McDermott Road Community Garden is a tiny garden in Peckham created in 2000 as part of the Bellenden Renewal Programme. The project was completed by local residents with a lot of help from Charlie Dimmock and was the subject of an episode of Charlie’s Garden Army.
The land is owned by Southwark Council and at the time of renovation was no more than a dumping ground attracting rats and other vermin. The project took three months and though undertaken many years ago the garden is still a delight. The trees have grown in the intervening years to give the impression of a glade in the middle of woods but unlike most glades is home to a sculpture of two fighting rams, mosaics, carved wooden seats and a specially designed metal arch.
